Line Fishing in St. Thomas
Return to Landings Page
Most line fishing in St. Thomas is carried out using handlines with some trolling
for kingfish during that season.  The main species in the fishery are the
yellowtail snapper and the hardnose (blue runner) with some bottom fishing for
Red hinds.

Fishermen go out at night with buckets of sand which them mix with anchovies
and use for chum behind the boat.  A good night is around 200 lbs with
yellowtail and hardnose going up to 8 lbs in the catch.  These fish are very
popular not only with local Virgin Islanders but also with restaurants who
prepare yellowtail with many different recipes.  Local Virgin Islanders prefer
"plate size" fish which they can fry or boil whole.
